Forestry career: 7 years

From being an employee at JA to a forestry manager

Before engaging in forestry, I was working at JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperative) for about 20 years. Since I was assigned to work at the gas station, I couldn’t take time off even on national holidays or during Obon. I was also unable to attend family gatherings. Around that time, I met self-employed people working in forestry who decided their own days off. I simply felt envious of their lifestyles. That’s why I entered this field of forestry.

Overcoming injuries in the mountainsand facing the mountains at my own pace.

You may have this image that forestry work is life-threatening. In fact I got a pretty serious injury while rushing my work. So I can definitely say that forest work should be done at your own pace. It's pointless if you cause an accident and get injured.

At first, due to my old habits from my office worker days, I worked hard from morning to around 5:00PM. But recently, on hot summer days, I've been starting work early in the morning and finishing around 3:00PM.

I 've decided to spend weekends with my family.

Before the pandemic, I often went to my children's sports clubs to cheer them on. It'salso my job to put my elementary schooler to bed. When I pat his back, he falls asleep quickly. It's very cute.

On the day before a rainy day, because we don't have work on rainy days, I can drink a lot as my reward for being a forestry worker. And on the next day, I can take it easy and spend time to do what I like.

As there are various jobs within the forestry industry, find one that suits you.

There are various kinds of forestry jobs available other than logging, which is what I do. You can choose other types of jobs such as tree planting, thinning or timber processing. I hope you will find the one that suits you.

I'm currently working by myself, but I often need support from others. Living in the countryside requires a sense of cooperation. So I’d appreciate it if you joined with that in mind.
